Current and former UCSD students will make an impact this fall as recipients of prestigious fellowships, including the Fulbright and Boren awards.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program, by the Institute of International Education via the State Department, offers honorees round-trip airfare and monthly stipends for expenses. Boren Fellowships offer $30,000 for work in areas deemed critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia and parts of Europe. Winners must commit to at least a year of service in the federal government in exchange.

The Fulbright scholars are:
- Edward Falk, doctoral candidate, research grant in Turkey
- Mable Huang, undergrad, research grant in China
- Katie Kinsella, received her masters in education last year, will teach at Columbia University on an English Teaching Assistantship grant
- Dominic Miller, MFA grad student, arts grant in Mexico
- Leonidas Mylonakis, doctoral candidate, research grant in Greece
- Ulices Pina, doctoral candidate, research grant in Mexico
- Robert Terrell, doctoral candidate, research grant in Germany
- Hannah Smith, doctoral candidate, research grant in India
- Jiakun Jack Zhang, doctoral candidate, research grant in China
The Boren scholars, all part of UCSD’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, are:
- Kent Boydston, for language studies in South Korea
- Mark Buttweiler, studies in south Korea
- Luke Sanford, studies in China
- Eli Yani, studies in China
The students are keeping UCSD in mind as they get set to embark on their travels.
“UC San Diego is one of the best places in the world to study contemporary China,” Zhang told UCSD News. “I would like to find local partners for ongoing UCSD-based projects and help build the UC San Diego brand in China.”
