A motorcyclist was killed Monday when he crashed into a large utility box alongside an Otay Mesa roadway.
The rider veered off Picador Boulevard near Beyer Way and slammed into the electrical box at a high rate of speed shortly before 4 a.m., San Diego Police Officer Dan Lasher said.
The rider’s name was not immediately made public, but he was around 40 years old. He died at the scene.
The crash investigation was delayed due to the electrical hazard. Electrical service in the area was shut off as repairs got underway.
San Diego Gas & Electric officials estimated that power would be restored to the 625 affected utility customers in Otay Mesa, Nestor and San Ysidro by 3 p.m.
It was not clear whether dense morning fog was a factor in the crash.
