Caltrans has closed the connector from southbound Interstate 805 to eastbound state Route 52 in the University City area for “emergency” bridge repairs, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Here is the full Caltrans statement:

SAN DIEGO—Caltrans Maintenance crews closed the southbound Interstate (I-805) connector to eastbound State Route 52 (SR-52) this afternoon to make temporary repairs to a deteriorated bridge expansion joint found earlier in the day.  The work is expected to take several hours to complete; however, one lane opened shortly after 4 p.m.

Sign trucks have been placed directing motorists on southbound I-805 to exit at Clairemont Mesa Boulevard east, then take northbound I-805 to eastbound SR-52.

Rubber bridge expansion joints allow expansion and contraction of the bridge between spans and protect the structure joints from dirt and debris. Caltrans determined that immediate repairs were needed.

The CHP issued a SigAlert at 2:22 p.m.

The ramp is expected to reopen about 8 p.m., the CHP advises.

At press time, the southbound 805 is jammed from about the I-5 split.
