More than 300 artists will exhibit their work at the 44th annual Harvest Festival this weekend in Del Mar, and one will invite her audience to participate.
Debbie Arambula, known as the “Heart Artist,” will release a special giant flag painting this weekend dedicated to the 9/11 emergency responders. She’ll invite people to select one of her handmade hearts and glue it onto the canvas.
In addition to the artwork and crafts, there’s live music and food throughout the three-day event.
The festival takes place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Friday through Sunday. Doors open at 10 a.m. each day.
General admission is $9 and children under 12 are free. Parking is $10.
Fern Street Circus at San Diego International Airport
Circus and airport are two words that rarely go together, except in San Diego. On Friday, the public is invited to a free show by San Diego’s acclaimed Fern Street Circus at Terminal 2. At 7 p.m. the troupe will perform “The Hectic & The Still.” It’s the culminating work of the group’s year-long performing arts residency. Professional acrobats, clowns, jugglers, aerialists and musicians will entertain, and parking at the airport will be free.
Cindarella by the San Diego Opera
Opera is a spectacle, and the revitalized San Diego Opera puts its all into each performance. Tickets starting at $25 are still available for Saturday’s 7 p.m. performance of “Cindarella” at the Civic Theatre Downtown. Rossini’s delightful 1817 version of the classic fairy tale shows that virtue does triumph and kindness can make your dreams come true, even without a fairy godmother and a glass slipper.
Sound Art at Cesar Chavez Park Pier
You can sample interactive sound art Saturday at the recently upgraded Cesar Chavez Park Pier. The Port of San Diego is sponsoring the free, temporary installation from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 1449 Cesar E. Chavez Parkway. Titled “Time Strata,” the installation by artist Margaret Noble will let attendees create their own personal sonic experience by mixing together and altering — in real time — sounds produced in the surrounding environment as well as those created by three custom sound sculptures: “Tide Rattler,” “Wheel Chime” and “Wind Harp.” Free doughnuts and refreshments will be available.
Cactus and Succulent Show in Encinitas
If you like nature’s prickly plants, the Palomar Cactus and Succulent Society‘s annual show at the San Diego Botanical Garden in Encinitas takes place on both Saturday and Sunday. Winners will be available for viewing both days. Plant, pottery and other vendors will also be selling unique items. Cost is free with garden membership or paid admission.
