In an election season dominated by attack ads, Rep. Scott Peters is trying a series of positive television spots focusing on how Congress can solve problems.

The third in the series features Dr. Howard and Jean Somers of Coronado, who became fierce advocates for fixing the problems at the Veterans Administration after their son, an Iraq War veteran, tragically took his own life. The Somers and Peters have worked together on reforms.

“In an election year dominated by blistering negative attacks on the national level, focusing on Rep. Peters’ strong record of accomplishments for San Diego is a better way to show voters that he is a different type of leader,” said Jacob Peters, the campaign’s communications director.

Earlier ads focused on ending political gridlock in Washington and helping students with massive college debt.

Peters is seeking re-election to his third term representing the 52nd District, which covers Coronado, La Jolla, much of San Diego and Poway.

He faces Republican Denise Gitsham, whose most recent ad attacked Peters “as “part of the problem in Washington” for voting in favor of the international agreement limiting Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
