A 21-year-old pedestrian walking in a center divider on Interstate 5 in Oceanside Monday afternoon was killed by an SUV that veered out of a southbound lane and struck her.

The woman was in the median just north of state Route 78, searching for coins she had previously seen while picking up trash as part of a Caltrans community service crew, when the 2016 Toyota 4Runner swerved off the freeway and hit her shortly after 3 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Medics took the gravely injured Escondido resident to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where she was pronounced dead, CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The 41-year-old El Cajon man who had been driving the SUV was unhurt. It was unclear why he lost control of the vehicle, though he was not suspected of being intoxicated, Bettencourt said.
