A Chihuahua rescued last week from a 6-foot-deep drain pipe in Lincoln Park was claimed by her owner, the county Department of Animal Services announced Wednesday.
Animal Services crews went Thursday to the back parking lot of the Imperial Fish Market, in the 800 block of Euclid Avenue, after good Samaritans noticed another canine peering into the eight-inch-diameter pipe. They went to investigate and found a second pooch at the bottom.
The Chihuahua, scared but otherwise OK, was pulled out by Animal Control Officer Angela Jones.
The dog, around 4 years old, was taken to the shelter on Gaines Street and would have been put up for adoption if the owner didn’t come forward.
According to a posting on the county’s Facebook page, the owner came in and told animal authorities that he didn’t know how his dog Lilly ended up in the drain pipe. It turned out that Lilly had to cross busy Euclid Avenue to even reach the area.
She is scheduled to go home with her owner, whose name was not released, on Thursday, county officials said.
