Authorities asked San Diegans Friday to be on the lookout for a father and his toddler son, whom the man allegedly kidnapped from the mother outside her home.

The California Highway Patrol issued a statewide Amber Alert this morning for Abraham Vargas, 27, and 2-year-old Edwin Vargas. The father allegedly has made prior threats to snatch the child and flee south with him.

During the noon hour, officials reported that the suspect’s 2004 Nissan Quest had been found abandoned in East Los Angeles, but the suspect and his son remained at large.

The toddler’s mother was putting him in her car at her Boyle Heights home about 6:30 this morning when Vargas allegedly pushed her aside, grabbed the boy and drove off with him.

“This is the first time that he’s actually tried to take the child as he did this morning,” LAPD Capt. Gary Lopez said. “They’ve had other discussions, and he’s made statements threatening to take the child and go toward Mexico, but this is the first time he’s actually taken any action.”

The woman, Vargas’ former girlfriend, has a restraining order against him, according to police.

At the time of the alleged abduction, the suspect, a roughly 180-pound Latino, was wearing blue jeans and a red sweat shirt. His son was clad in blue sweat pants and a red sweat shirt.

Anyone who believes they might have spotted either of them was asked to call 911.
