A single traffic fatality occurred in the San Diego area over the long Labor Day weekend, one fewer than during the three-day holiday last year, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.
Over the same 78-hour period, CHP officers took 71 drivers into custody for allegedly driving while intoxicated on local roads, eight fewer than in the comparable period of 2015, according to the state agency.
Statewide, vehicle crashes claimed 38 lives — six more than last year — from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Monday, and a total of 1,083 motorists were jailed by the CHP on suspicion of DUI offenses, a decrease of 143 from the end- of-summer holiday weekend a year ago.
