Former San Diego City Attorney Casey Gwinn on Thursday added his name to those endorsing Mara Elliott in her bid to succeed Jan Goldsmith as the city’s top legal officer.
“For 20 years Mara Elliott has put her legal expertise to work fighting for ordinary people by investigating perpetrators of elder abuse and rooting out waste and fraud at city hall,” said Gwinn. “As city attorney, Mara Elliott will fight to protect vulnerable citizens from crime and crack down on domestic violence and abuse against women, children and the elderly.”
Gwinn, who served from 1996 to 2004, is the second former city attorney to endorse Elliott. Earlier in the campaign, John Witt gave his endorsement. Elliott is a Democrat, but both Gwinn and Witt are Republicans.
“I am honored to earn the support of Casey Gwinn, a tough prosecutor and leader in the fight against domestic violence,” said Elliott. “As city attorney, I will tackle abuse against women, children and the elderly.”
Elliott, the chief deputy city attorney, faces Robert Hickey in the November runoff election. Hickey is a deputy city attorney and former prosecutor of the year. He is endorsed by the San Diego Republican Party and the Regional Chamber of Commerce.
