The City Council Monday paid its respects to slain San Diego police Officer Jonathan “JD” DeGuzman by taking a moment of silence before its meeting and adjourning in his honor.
DeGuzman was fatally shot Thursday night in Southcrest, leaving behind a wife and two children. A second officer, Wade Irwin, was injured.
“This apparent cold-blooded killing has left the police department and many of our citizens devastated and stunned by continued violence and killings of other police officers across the nation,” said Councilwoman Marti Emerald, who represents Southcrest and chairs the panel’s Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee.
DeGuzman, 43, was the 33rd San Diego police officer to die in the line of duty, Emerald said.
The suspect, 52-year-old Jesse Michael Gomez, was also shot and was captured in a nearby canyon.
