Three San Diego Councilmen took a break from their civic duties to show off their skills at the annual Over the Line tournament last weekend.
Councilmen Scott Sherman, Chris Cate and Mark Kersey participated in the 63rd annual sporting event hosted by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club. The goal of the game is to hit the ball over the line, which is about 55 feet in front of the batter.
The tournament, which took place on the sands of Mission Bay, typically attracts a diverse crowd of residents who sport wacky and funny outfits. This year, more than 1,200 teams of three people competed in the tournament with the best advancing to the second weekend.
Sherman, whose team was dubbed “The Bald and The Beautiful,” said the trio decided to play after Cate brought up the idea.
“I use to play 30 years ago so I thought, ‘Why not go out and have some fun?’” said Sherman, who had his knee replaced seven months ago. “Other than one big scrape on my knee, I thought we did great.”
Sherman said the three Council members played two games but lost both. Still, the team did decently considering they only practiced for one weekend prior to the tournament, Sherman said.
“It’s more about the atmosphere and having a chance to get away and being with each other,” said Sherman, who grew up in Allied Gardens. “Over the Line has been around since 1953 and it’s one of those things that’s native to San Diego and the culture here. The guys who put it on do a great job.”
So, will the Council members give it another go next year?
“I’d be more than happy to try,” Sherman said. “If we get a little more practice in we would probably have a better showing.”
