Two incidents involving big rigs tied up different segments of Interstate 5 Tuesday – one for hours.

The more serious case involved a collision of a big rig around 10 a.m. that blocked part of one side of the freeway until nearly 6 p.m.

The crash closed three lanes on the northbound side of I-5 near the Washington Street off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Two southbound I-5 lanes were also affected, according to Caltrans, as crews worked to remove the semi from the center divider.

Officials re-opened the southbound lanes just after 4 p.m., but said at that time that the No. 1-3 lanes on the northbound side “remain closed as cleanup continues” Caltrans said, leading to a backup that stretched into the evening commute.

In an incident that began around the same time, in Carlsbad, a big rig stalled, blocking the No. 3 and 4 lanes of I-5 south at Tamarack Avenue. That incident, however, was cleared much more quickly, with lanes re-opened by 11 a.m.
