Potentially dangerous rip currents and higher than average surf are expected to develop Tuesday as a pair of swells move toward the San Diego County coastline.
A National Weather Service beach hazards statement warning of rip and longshore currents is set to remain in effect from 6 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday evening.
Forecasters said rip currents would begin churning as the first and weaker of a couple of long-period south swells brings periods of high surf to south and southwest facing beaches. The waves will build to 3 to 5 feet at North County beaches Tuesday, and sets of up to 7 feet will be possible along the coast throughout the county Wednesday and Thursday.
“The surf will gradually decrease Friday though rip currents could remain strong then,” according to the weather service.
The weather service advised beachgoers to obey posted warning signs, use caution around the water and always swim near a lifeguard.
