ICE arrests near schools spur new outcry in San Diego

ICE has executed at least four arrests of parents and students on streets bordering San Diego school facilities.

The same thing happened a year ago, when ICE agents also arrested multiple parents near schools during back-to-school season.

And like last year, local officials have again issued pleas to federal agents to knock it off.

The repeat demonstrates the continued distance on enforcement policy between local political sentiment and national policy, as our Lillian Perlmutter reports in a new story. But it also underlines the limited authority local officials have on immigration enforcement.

A joint statement by San Diego Unified board members and state and local officials says as much, making clear that ICE’s actions are allowed, as long as they aren’t on school property.

“We are asking federal authorities, clearly and urgently: please stop conducting immigration enforcement near our schools during arrival and dismissal times,” the statement reads.

A year ago, a Department of Homeland Security official reiterated that arrests near schools are OK, though she said they’d be rare. Overall, migrant arrests have surged in the months since then despite the public outcry, according to recently released federal data.
