Hello, Downtown!
One of the tastiest novelties served up at Comic-Con International is the tradition of unique chocolate bars handcrafted by the San Diego Convention Center’s in-house pastry team.
Of course, Comic-Con is the celebration of superheroes and pop art that annually draws 130,000 attendees downtown. This year’s mega-event is July 23-26.
Not everyone who gets a hot ticket into the show will be able to get their hands on a craft chocolate bar. Only 7,000 bars were made this year. It’s the 10th anniversary of these limited-edition treats and the stock always sells out.
This is the fourth year I got a sneak peek at the boldly delicious confections, packaged with culinary wit and charm. The bars are rich. And hefty. I find that it takes me three days to eat just one.
There are four flavors. Top Yum is a dark chocolate take on s’mores. Mint Condition serves up mint chocolate ganache. Canyon Quest is a gluten-free, vegan twist of dark chocolate and sour cherries, pepitas and sunflower seeds. Daybreaker features white chocolate and a tropical, beachy vibe.
A limited number of candy bars are sold each day of Comic-Con. They’re available at a booth in Lobby 20 of the convention center. They go for $12.
In the spirit of Willy Wonka, there are “golden tickets” hidden inside the wrappers of four chocolate bars. Each one is redeemable for a $100 Starbucks gift card.
I checked – my candy bars don’t include golden tickets. Not too worry. I’ll still be snacking on top-shelf chocolate goodness days after Comic-Con has left the building.
