‘Love always wins’: SD Pride shines on in an uncertain political environment
Another San Diego Pride Parade is in the books, but the revelry isn’t quite over – today’s the last day of the Pride fest, not to mention the many parties that spread out through Hillcrest and nearby communities.
It’s the season, as one woman said, when so many people say “let’s put some rainbows on” to celebrate themselves, their community, their loved ones and their dear friends.
Reporters Nicole Abrams, Eileen Mamaghani and Andi Ruiz fanned out over the parade route, from University Avenue to Sixth Avenue, to hear from people who cheered from the streets, and even those who found comfy spots to watch from cafes.
Some of them brought up the political climate – how could they not? – and safety and injustice came up too. But so did resilience – and even better, joy. “It’s impossible not to smile in this environment,” an organizer said.
Even in joy, this modern moment can feel precarious, but one retiree said he doesn’t want Pride or the LGBTQ+ community to respond with negativity.
How then? In a wink, perhaps, to Michelle Obama, he concluded simply, “You’ve got to take the high road.”
