A new fire station is coming to Webster. But will the community get a say in where it goes?
A park. A new fire station. Both are highly desirable assets for a community.
But now a Mid-City community is fired up because it appears the city is rushing to build a much-needed station for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department – on open space that many residents would much prefer to see left pristine.
And add this bit: The Webster station is currently projected to be the most expensive fire station in city history.
The fire station, for sure, is sorely needed. The community, as contributor JW August writes, represents “the most significant gap in the city’s fire response.” But like many urban areas, there’s a significant parkland gap too.
A critic said the city is “digging its heels in” on the official preferred site, at 47th Street and Fairmount Avenue, rather than looking at alternatives the community could embrace.
Should a community have to choose between two things so vital as fire protection and open space? Stay tuned.
