Hello, Navajo and College Area!
I’ve lived in San Carlos for just over ten years now. When we moved in, neighbors and some former councilmembers talked about a shiny new library coming to San Carlos.
It turns out, those public officials, and the ones who preceded them, had been talking about that for 20 years before my family and I moved in.
Over the years, while taking my kids to the library or just driving, I kept an eye out to see if I could spot a notice about upcoming construction. Maybe some type of bulldozer or construction equipment signaling the start of demolition? Nothing.
At my previous job, I spoke to current Councilmember Raul Campillo’s Office, and even in what were dire straits then, all plans were a go for a new San Carlos Library.
A few weeks back, I went to the Navajo Planning Group meeting and sat while Campillo’s representative, Anthony Hackett, delivered what was the nail in the proverbial coffin for a new San Carlos Library.
“It is dead,” Hackett told a resident. The mayor, Hackett said, killed the project.
Having covered the city of San Diego for nearly 20 years, I have grown accustomed to hearing and seeing libraries on the chopping block. So while the news didn’t come as a surprise, it was eye-opening to hear what happened to the millions that the city had set aside for the new library.
