Aloha, La Jolla!

If history has its eyes on us, do we meet its gaze or look away?

La Jollans can answer that question for themselves the evening of Tuesday, June 9, when Holocaust survivor Ben Midler brings his compelling story to the La Jolla Riford Library. The childhood survivor of six concentration camps, Midler lost his entire family during that horrifying chapter of World War II, the largest and deadliest conflict in human history.

Midler’s appearance will add a lens of living history to “San Diego Holocaust Survivors Tell Their Stories.

Presented by RUTH: Remember Us the Holocaust, the multimedia learning experience highlights the poignant stories of San Diego Holocaust survivors against an arresting backdrop of Holocaust and World War II artifacts.

Visitors walk among 16 life-size cardboard cutouts of local Holocaust survivors as they look and live today. I happened upon the exhibition during an impromptu library visit. Stepping onto the landing of the upstairs wing of the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Annex, I looked up and into the eyes of Maria Coleman. Finding her moxie irresistible, I began my 45-minute journey through the exhibition, its cheerful ambassadors lighting my way.

“San Diego Holocaust Survivors Tell Their Stories” will close on Midler’s powerful crescendo. Its testimonials and artifacts will take a summer hiatus before returning to life at San Diego’s downtown Central Library in September.

I wouldn’t miss Midler’s presentation for the world. His kind eyes and expectant smile assure me that joy and gratitude can dwell beyond the heartbreak of history’s darkest hour.

Hope expressed in its purest form, Ben Midler’s story is a gift for the ages.

The La Jolla Riford Library is located at 7555 Draper St. Ben Midler’s presentation will begin at 6 p.m.
