Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!

Remember that dreamy drone show on the Fourth of July about three years ago? It was quite the spectacle, but it hasn’t appeared since. This Independence Day won’t be any different. The drone show is permanently grounded in 2026 for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

In 2023, the Luminosity Committee was put together in OB to raise funds for the first drone show. However, they’ve run into problems since.

According to event organizers, the city’s Parks and Recreation and Special Events departments made it difficult for the committee to approve the drone show in subsequent years.

The city cited safety concerns and crowd sizes during the 2023 event for not approving the event this year. Meanwhile, Seaworld just announced that they would be shifting their summer fireworks to the environmentally cleaner option of drone shows.

This has left the OB Luminosity Committee in confusion as to why they haven’t been able to put the show on since, especially as Seaworld’s has been approved.

After last week’s news that the OB Street Fair could face budget cuts, it’s even more disheartening to hear that another event in our community might take a hit.

Growing up I used to visit my uncle every Fourth of July at his house on Voltaire Street. It was always a treat to walk to the beach and see the fireworks in the evening. It made me fall in love with OB and eventually want to move here when I moved out of the house.

So let’s keep supporting these events if we can. They make the community stronger and feel more connected!
