The San Diego Padres notched their first shutout win of 2016 with a 2-0 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night.
The Padres had been shutout eight times before the win on Friday night.
The Padres, who moved their record to 13-17 on the year, saw another dominant start from Drew Pomeranz, who matched Mets ace Noah Syndegaard with five innings of one-hit ball while, striking out five batters.
Pomeranz leads all Padres starters this season with three wins, 41 strikeouts and a 2.12 ERA in six starts.
Closer Fernando Rodney got his eighth save of the year, which puts him at fifth in the National League.
Rodney has yet to allow an earned run in 12 appearances in 2016.
The Padres took the lead on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Matt Kemp in the first inning, Kemp’s 23rd RBI of 2016, which leads the team.
They expanded the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single from center fielder John Jay in the fifth.
Jay went 3-4 on the night including two singles and one double.
The win gives the Padres a 13-17 record on the year, a half game ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks for worst in the NL West and 2.5 games back of the San Francisco Giants for first in the division.
The Padres continue their series against the Mets at Petco Park on Saturday night when James Shields take on Bartolo Colon.
