City police were dispatched to San Diego State University on Tuesday to help campus officers monitor a raucous student protest over “Islamophobic” fliers.
The protest was sparked by fliers posted on campus listing the names of students who “have allied themselves with Palestinian terrorists to perpetrate BDS and Jew Hatred on this campus.” Protesters called the fliers “Islamophobic” and criticized university President Elliot Hirshman for not forcefully condemning them.
The BDS Movement, a national organization, seeks to boycott, divest from and sanction Israel over its military control of the West Bank.
A group of nearly 100 students gathered in the late afternoon, and Hirshman met with them. He had earlier sent an email to all SDSU students about the fliers, saying that listing names “could discourage students from participating in political discussions.”
Personnel with the San Diego Police Department were sent to SDSU shortly after 5 p.m., SDPD Officer Ben Newton said. There were no reports of violence, he said.
The fliers were produced by a Los Angeles-based activist organization that is not student run, and distributed at UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara in addition to SDSU.
