Overview: SDSU student-athletes and pets

Student-athletes representing soccer, cross country, basketball, swimming and diving, and football provided critical support to shelter operations.

While many student-athletes have their plates filled with competition, studying, and various other activities, some find the time to give back to some of their furry friends.

Last Saturday, more than two dozen San Diego State University student-athletes spent part of their Valentine’s Day providing love and care to approximately 1,200 pets sheltered at the San Diego Humane Society.

Student-athletes representing various sports provided critical support to shelter operations.

Their efforts were directed toward:

  • Nutritional care: Hand-crafting 460 meatballs for canine enrichment and afternoon snacks.
  • Shelter logistics: Folding two massive bins of laundry to help ensure clean kennels for 700+ dogs.
  • Adoption readiness: Preparing 100 adoption packets to help transition pets into their forever homes.

The students also took part in a Valentine’s Day-themed photo shoot with several shelter dogs, helping highlight the 713 dogs currently waiting for a second opportunity to find a loving home.
