Feeling the sunshine tax

We’re all feeling the sting of rising costs in San Diego. With the addition of more parking meters and higher fees along beach streets last summer, our neighborhood understands the impact of the city’s $318 million budget shortfall. 

Paid parking at Balboa Park has sparked citywide concerns about residents being forced to pay more to make up for the city’s budget. But it’s not just parking: 

• Trash rates went up to $40+ per month for single-family homes when this service had previously been free
• Water rates are going up 30% over the next two years 
• Permits and event fees have gone up by 20% 
• Recreational field use fees went up by 185%, so rec league sports are likely to cost more this season
• This also means we’re facing delayed repairs on things like roads, water mains and traffic issues 

North PB resident Ayesha Anand is one of many that have been hit with increased water rates in 2026. When asked about her experience, she said, “It’s frustrating to feel like I have no control over these costs. The most expensive parts of the bill are not usage-based, it’s all fees that I can’t change.”

It doesn’t appear that the city will be lowering these rates any time soon, putting the squeeze on residents already feeling the effects of a struggling economy, high inflation and San Diego’s Sunshine Tax.
