POINT LOMA – The sturdy and reliable spine of the Peninsula offers spectacular sunrise and sunset views, depending on your point of view.

Pointers win CIF boys soccer championship

The No. 7 seed Point Loma Pointers defeated top-seeded Calexico High on penalty kicks to win the title.

New drainage plans for Sunset Cliffs

Years in the making, in April, design work was advancing on long-term drainage improvements in Sunset Cliffs Natural Park’s Hillside Section. The 50-acre Hillside Section is part of the 68-acre resource-based park bordering the western edge of Point Loma.

City approves Safe Parking Program at H Barracks

On April 10, the City Council’s Land Use and Housing Committee unanimously approved a contract with Jewish Family Service of San Diego to implement a Safe Parking Program at H Barracks adjacent to the airport and near Liberty Station.

ADU Bonus Program revamped

A majority of the San Diego City Council agreed with public concerns that the ADU Bonus Program allowed excessive densification and exploitation by some developers, compromising the character of single-family neighborhoods.

Point Loma Rotary Club celebrates 75 years

At the Rotary Club’s anniversary celebration on April 27, members reminisced about years gone by, and all the accomplishments and benefits the community has reaped as a result of the club’s efforts and initiatives.

Residents rally against housing project

Protect Point Loma updated residents on the battle against the 1004 Rosecrans St. project at a town hall held at Liberty Station Conference Center. At the June 11 meeting, Protect Point Loma, a nonprofit advocating for the safety and well-being of the community, detailed why the City’s Complete Communities plan, justifying the affordable housing project, doesn’t fit and won’t work.

Point Loma High centennial

On Sept. 8, 1925, Point Loma Junior-Senior High School opened with a staff of 30 teachers and 386 students in grades 7-12.

A century later, the Point Loma community, including alumni and former staff, marked this milestone with a celebration on Sept. 13 at Port Pavilion on the Broadway Pier. In the early 1920s, Edgar F. Hastings, a member of the Board of Education, felt that a new high school needed to be built in a slowly developing community between San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. That school became Point Loma High.

Dedication of ‘The Joan’ at Liberty Station

The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center at Liberty Station was formally dedicated on Sept. 5, with a ribbon-cutting full of celebratory spirit. The center, located at 2880 Roosevelt Road, features a 289-seat proscenium theater and a 150-seat flexible studio space, as well as support areas including dressing rooms, two green rooms, a costume shop and dedicated rehearsal and orchestra spaces.

Midway Rising developers plan to continue project

The developers behind a plan to redevelop the area around Pechanga Arena into a dense, urban nightlife district say a court ruling in October that retained a 30-foot height limit on building heights there won’t stop the project. The proposal to build a new sports arena and 4,000 homes — with half reserved for low-income residents — includes buildings up to 85-feet tall.

Point Loma football completes unbeaten regular season

The Pointers finished the regular season undefeated when they beat St. Augustine 31-7 on Oct. 31. This marks the first time since 2005, under Mike Hastings, the Pointers recorded a 10-0 mark during the regular season.
