Good morning, San Diego.

For the seventh time since the start of 2023, we successfully held an election this week. Congratulations to all the political consultants. Condolences to all the political donors.

This time around, we approved Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to gerrymander the state’s congressional districts to give Democrats a chance to flip five seats and combat red states doing the same.

Now, our 48th district is set to be a national political battleground in next year’s midterms (though GOP officials are challenging the result).

Democratic challengers include San Diego Councilmember Marni von Wilpert and multiple-time candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar against Republican Rep. Darrell Issa.

But don’t overlook the other item on Tuesday’s ballot, a recall of Poway Councilmember Tony Blain, who had just been indicted on multiple felony charges, including bribery and perjury.

The recall won big, and he resigned Wednesday.

That could lead to — I kid you not — another special election.

Oh, hey: Times of San Diego had its own news this week. We launched a new fresh and clean look for all our community papers. Check it out and let us know what you think.

San Diego International Airport is among the airports grappling with the Federal Aviation Administration’s order to reduce flights by 10% because of the government shutdown.

It’s an unprecedented development, so we’re right there with you trying to figure out what it means.

The really great news is, that’s not the only massive, unavoidable traveling disruption facing San Diego this weekend.

Once again, a major stretch of I-5 is currently closed. You’re right if you think that’s been happening a lot lately — it’s part of a $113 million Caltrans project to maintain the freeway, as Jennifer Vigil outlined this week.

It’s been seven years since voters rejected “SoccerCity SD” — a plan to replace the hole the Chargers left in Mission Valley with a soccer stadium and surrounding development — and if you’ve somehow missed it, San Diego went and became Soccer City anyhow.

San Diego FC has had an historic debut season, but their bid to become the second ever expansion team to win the MLS Cup could come to an abrupt end Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium in an elimination playoff game against the Portland Timbers.

The San Diego Wave, who have been making their own history in the NWSL, are also facing Portland in a Sunday playoff matchup, after rebuilding their squad this year.

Opinion: A swastika display at a high school does not constitute free speech

An antisemitic incident at a high school in Encinitas is a reminder that students do not have the same free speech rights as adults.
