Hello, Navajo and College Area!
While I wanted to come on here and say, “Yay! It’s Halloween, let’s get excited,” it doesn’t feel quite right.
I can’t ignore it, it’s been a heavy week. I hope you all are taking care of yourselves and your loved ones. When a family loses a child to something so mundane as crossing the street to school, it moves us all. Young or old, we all realize the preciousness of life and how much we need each other in times like these. I have hope that this community will rally to look out for Andrew Olsen’s family in this period of unimaginable grief.
Instead of sharing some Halloween events — you’ll probably be busy anyway, stationed at the front door or trailing behind a conglomerate of characters as they scream “trick or treat” — I wanted to share a GoFundMe to support the family in case you haven’t considered it already. It’s about $20,000 away from its goal.
Another San Carlos family who could use support is the family of De’Veonte Morris. The 19-year-old lost his life in the car crash that took the life of a La Mesa police officer as well. The GoFundMe to support his family is about 10% away from its goal.
Our top story today is about what went wrong with Jackson Drive. Times of San Diego intern Calista Stocker made a disturbing discovery about the intersection.

City flagged San Carlos intersection as dangerous, then denied safety improvements for it before child’s death
By Calista Stocker • Times of San Diego
The intersection on a wide, high-speed road near a school didn’t meet the city’s criteria for crosswalks or a four-way stop. Another city analysis said it had “fatal crash characteristics.”
