A search was underway Saturday for a suspect who allegedly shot two people and pistol-whipped a third after authorities failed to locate him in a storage facility.
Police and a SWAT team surrounded A Storage Place at 605 Anita St. to look for the suspect but did not find him, according to a report on the KUSI website. Police were dispatched at 6:25 a.m. to the 24-Hour Fitness at Broadway and Palomar in response to someone reporting that people were shot in the area.
Two of the victims appeared to have been shot in the lower extremities and the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. The shooting victims were transported to an area hospital, police said. It was unclear if the pistol- whipping victim received medical care.
The suspect knew the three male victims, according to a KUSI-TV news report. During a televised press conference earlier on Saturday, Capt. Lon Turner of the Chula Vista Police Department said surveillance video showed the suspect entering the storage facility.
KUSI also reported that all three victims worked at a tortilla factory, but it was unclear if the suspect was also an employee. The shooting suspect was described as a 5-foot-10, heavyset Latino man who was armed with a handgun. He was last seen wearing dark clothing.
