Good morning, San Diego.

I’m a Los Angeles native so the idea of a city being frozen and unable to cope because of a freeway shutdown both alarms and tickles me – nearly simultaneously.

Are carpocalypse and carmageddon played out yet? As long as Caltrans keeps springing these big repair jobs on us, I say no.

So let this serve as our final reminder. Tonight at 9 p.m. and through the weekend, avoid the northbound 5 from the 8 to Mission Bay Drive. That is one busy stretch of San Diego freeway, folks, and we have a link to the recommended detours below, but really, save yourself the headache if at all possible.

So, the subject line. Pun on a classic film – you know the one. To get your juices flowing, what year did it come out? a) 1974 b) 1976 c) 1979 d) 1981. Readers who get it right: I’ll shout you out in tomorrow’s newsletter (no googling, please).

Turning from the apocalyptic to the sublime, the San Diego Music Hall of Fame inducts seven new members Saturday. We have a preview in which the founder explains why the intent is to give “special attention to people who, in addition to their own musical journey, have done things to lift up the entire community.”

We also have a profile of one of this year’s inductees, John Reis, whose “hard-charging rock & roll cut a swath across the bountiful 1990s alt-punk landscape and helped define San Diego’s contribution to the era.”

Congrats to the 2025 Hall of Fame class!
