
A major crash on the southbound I-15 near Carmel Mountain Ranch left one person dead and as many as nine people injured on Sunday morning .
The freeway was also temporarily shut down down after the four-vehicle collision, which was reported just before 9 a.m. Sunday on the south I-15 near Camino del Norte, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The crash originally involved three vehicles in the carpool lane, but one of them was then struck by a fourth vehicle.
It was unclear if the victim pronounced dead at the scene was included in the number of people injured. The California Highway Patrol said that officers were following up with them at area hospitals.
The department said the carpool lane on the 15 was temporarily shut down near Carmel Mountain Road while officials remained on the scene, but has since reopened.
The investigation is continuing.
