Hot Santa Ana winds from a high pressure system over the desert set new heat records in some North County areas, according to the National Weather Service.
Escondido hit of 89, beating the previous record of 88 was set in 1943. Vista reported a high of 89, breaking the old record of 86 that was set in 1985.
Oceanside Harbor reached a high of 79, topping the previous record of 78, also set in 1985.
Strong winds were recorded Monday morning in the Santa Ana Mountains in Orange County. Freemont Canyon reached 63 mph shortly before 8 a.m., while Pleasant Peek reached 59 mph at 12:20 a.m.
The winds were expected to die down Tuesday in Southern California, but the temperatures were expected to rise, according to National Weather Service Forecaster Jimmy Taeger.
Then the cooling trend begins on Wednesday with rain in the forecast late Wednesday into Thursday morning. A 50 percent chance of rain exists along the San Diego coast and about a 70 percent chance in the mountains during that time, according to Taeger.
