Crews continued to make progress Thursday in holding the spread of a wildfire that scorched around 28 acres of hilly terrain near Steele Canyon High School, forcing evacuations but causing no reported structural damage or injuries.
The blaze erupted just before 2 p.m. Wednesday off Star Acres Drive, near Steele Canyon Road in Rancho San Diego, according to Cal Fire.
The fire was 85% contained as of 7 a.m. Thursday, fire officials reported.
“Three engines and one hand crew will be mopping up the area. We expect to have the fire one hundred percent contained by the end of today if weather conditions are in our favor,” a public information officer with Cal Fire told City News Service.
All evacuation orders and road closures have been lifted due to improved containment, but authorities advised residents returning home to “please be mindful of firefighters who are still working in the area,” the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said.
The cause of the blaze remained under investigation.
