It’s July, San Diego.
Somehow it got to be the seventh month of 2025 already, but how this happened I wouldn’t be able to tell you.
Anyway, today’s the final day of the District 1 Supervisorial special election, and it’s really one for the books — since Nora Vargas resigned, San Diego County’s Board of Supervisors has consisted of two Democrats and two Republicans, so despite technically being about a nonpartisan governing body, this one election will potentially tip the balance of power for millions of people and a stretch of international border, one way or another.
No pressure though.
As a palate cleanser after that, perhaps check out our feature story about San Marcos artist and cartoonist Greg Evans, whose beloved, long-running comic “Luann” is currently featured in an exhibit at the Comic-Con Museum.
As we close in on the July 4th holiday, this year has made it clear that it is more important than ever to know your rights, because you do have rights in the United States — no matter what your immigration status might be. To that end, we’ve got a story about an app that tracks ICE activity and an opinion piece observing that knowledge is power.

Undocumented individuals have the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney, and the right to ask ICE to provide a warrant signed by a judge.
