Authorities sought Tuesday to identify a man who tried to forcibly grope a San Diego City College student at the downtown campus shortly after befriending her on public transit.
The woman told investigators the man, whom she knew only as “Abraham,” suddenly grabbed her about 2 p.m. Monday while they were in a stairwell at the college’s T Building, according to the San Diego Community College District Police Department.
The man “basically forced himself on her,” trying to kiss and grope her, campus police Lt. Lou Zizzo said. After the woman resisted and protested, the man let her go.
The woman, in her early 20s, told authorities she had met the man for the first time several hours earlier while riding a city bus in the Skyline area, on her way to school. They conversed, exchanged phone numbers and transferred onto a trolley together, and the man accompanied her onto the grounds of the East Village college.
The woman then attended a class, and found her new acquaintance waiting for her when it was over, Zizzo said. The alleged assault occurred a short time later, after which the woman remained in the man’s company for a time.
When she went home, the student told her aunt what had happened, and the older woman alerted campus officials.
The student described “Abraham” as a roughly 5-foot-6-inch Hispanic or light-skinned black man in his mid-20s, wearing blue or black sweat pants and a gray shirt with yellow and blue lettering of some kind on it.
There was no indication that he is enrolled at City College, Zizzo said.
