A man in his 70s died in an apparent shooting early Tuesday in the Swan Canyon neighborhood of City Heights, officials said.

Officers were dispatched at around 3:20 a.m. Tuesday after reports of a possible gunshot in the area of 4630 Olive St., according to the San Diego Police Department.

Prior to the arrival of patrol officers, the possible shooter, who according to a witness was dressed all in black, left the area on foot to the south in an alley off 46th Street, police said.

“Officers canvassed the nearby canyon and surrounding streets for the person in black but were not able to locate him,” SDPD Lt. Lou Maggi said.

“Information is extremely limited at this time. Detectives are processing the scene for evidence, security (camera) footage and witnesses.”

Police officials said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately available.

It remains unclear whether the shooting was premeditated or a random act, police said.
