Law enforcement identified a police officer on Wednesday who shot and wounded a man following a disturbance at a library in San Diego earlier this month.

On May 8 around 4:20 p.m., officers responded after a witness reported a man vandalizing property and wielding an axe-like weapon inside the Pacific Beach/Taylor Library, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

Officer Dominic Bloemendaal, a seven-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, fired multiple rounds that struck the suspect in the 4300 block of Dawes St., police said.

“Officers provided immediate medical aid and called for paramedics. Paramedics arrived and transported the suspect to a local hospital where he is expected to survive,” the department said in a statement.

The suspect, 54-year-old San Diego County resident William John Hanley, was charged with suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and resisting an executive officer.

Police said detectives recovered the weapon at the scene.

It was unclear what prompted the disturbance.
