Authorities Friday publicly identified the 76-year-old East Coast man killed when the car he was driving crashed off a bluffside La Jolla street and landed in the Pacific Ocean.
David Lapensee of Tampa, Florida, was driving a car that veered off the roadway in the 1200 block of Coast Boulevard at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, smashed through a fence and plunged over the edge of a cliff alongside the waterfront, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
After emergency crews pulled Lapensee from the car, paramedics took him to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead at about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday.
The cause and manner of Lapensee’s death remained under investigation Friday, the medical examiner reported.
