An outbreak occurred aboard a cruise ship that left San Diego for Puerto Vallarta during Christmas week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 73 passengers and 11 crew members on the Holland America Line‘s Veendam cruise ship experienced vomiting and diarrhea during their voyage from Dec. 20 and Dec. 27.

A CDC Vessel Sanitation Program environmental health officer boarded the ship on Dec. 27 when it returned to San Diego to evaluate the outbreak and response of the company.

It’s still unclear what caused the outbreak but the company said it increased its cleaning and disinfection procedures.
