Navy Federal Credit Union on Monday opened it’s second branch inside Naval Base San Diego — and its 23rd branch in the San Diego area.

“We are now better able to serve those who work here on base,” said Paul Smith, branch manager. “To be able to serve on this beautiful and historic installation is a great opportunity. We have been working for six years to make this branch a reality.”

Navy Federal CEO Cutler Dawson, a former deputy chief of naval operations, was in San Diego for the opening.

The new branch is located near the main San Diego Navy Exchange and commissary at 2260 Callagan Highway.

As part of the opening, Navy Federal made a $1,000  donation to Operation Homefront, which helps military families by providing food assistance, auto and home repair, vision care essential home items and financial assistance.

The credit union, founded in 1933, has over 50,000 members in the San Diego area and 5 million nationwide. It is the world’s largest credit union with assets totaling $72 billion at the end of the third quarter.
