The San Diego Gulls failed to score the tying goal on four third-period power-play opportunities in a 3-1 loss Saturday evening to the Milwaukee Admirals. This extends their losing streak to five games, their longest of the season.
The Gulls (9-6-0-1) were held to a first-period power-play goal by Chris Mueller in their third game in four nights in three states. Gulls defenseman Brandon Montour had an assist on the goal, his 10th assist on a power-play goal, the most in the American Hockey League.
Frederick Gaudreau scored what proved to be the winning goal 17 minutes, 37 seconds into the second period. Adam Payerl added an empty net goal with 22 seconds left as the Admirals (11-4-1-0) won their team record-equaling ninth consecutive game.
Kevin Fiala opened the scoring 3:28 into the first period for Milwaukee, the Nashville Predators’ AHL affiliate.
Admirals goaltender Marek Mazanec stopped 29 of 30 shots before a crowd announced at 3,764 at Milwaukee’s BMO Harris Bradley Center. Gulls goaltender John Gibson stopped 34 of 36 shots.
Gulls left wing Nic Kerdiles and Milwaukee defenseman Conor Allen engaged in the game’s only fight at 15:21 of the second period, both receiving five-minute major penalties.
The game concluded the Admirals’ fourth annual “Salute to Seinfeld Weekend.” Phil Morris, who played flamboyant attorney Jackie Chiles on five episodes of the classic 1990-98 NBC comedy, signed autographs for fans.
The “Salute to Seinfeld Weekend” began Friday with Brian George signing autographs. George portrayed Pakistani immigrant Babu Bhatt, best remembered for his description of the character played by Jerry Seinfeld as a “very, very bad man.”
