At least one person was struck and injured in downtown San Diego Monday night when a group of people tried to cross the tracks.
According to police, a group of people became impatient after a train was sitting on the tracks and blocking access to 5th Avenue across the street from the Convention Center and decided to climb over and under the train.
“The trolley arms were down, it was a slow moving train and people… didn’t want to wait for the train,” San Diego police Lt. Anthony Reese told Onscene.Media.
The engineer had no idea that the BNS&F train had struck anybody and thus did not stop, he said. First responders found one person on the tracks.
“One female tried to cross and either got slipped and fell or got stuck underneath the train, and her right leg got run over,” Reese said, adding that her leg may have to be amputated.
He said that the incident highlights the danger of being around moving trains — even slow ones.
