Following a 27-24 win over Hawaii, two players from San Diego State’s football team were named Mountain West conference players of the week.
Trey White and Danny O’Neil both won the award for the first time in their collegiate careers. White won defensive player of the week while O’Neil earned freshman of the week.
O’Neil led a fourth quarter comeback for the Aztecs over the Rainbow Warriors, throwing for 224 yards and playing turnover-free football. White totaled four tackles for loss and three sacks in the conference win. He also recorded the second most quarterback pressures in FBS during week six, according to Pro Football Focus.
Coach Sean Lewis acknowledged there are still things to clean up, but he is excited to continue conference play on the road Saturday against Wyoming, a place they haven’t played since 2016.
“They’re a dangerous team,” Lewis said at a Monday press conference. “They’re well-coached, physical, and really sound.”
The Cowboys are coming off their first win of the season, winning their Mountain West opener over Air Force 31-19. With both teams coming off wins, Lewis knows they need to slow down a Wyoming team coming off their best offensive performance of the year.
“Having a guy like Trey White and a group up front that’s hungry to hunt helps,” Lewis said.
Saturday’s game in Laramie, Wyoming kicks off at 12:30 p.m. PST.
