The San Diego State football team defeated Hawaii 27-24 Saturday in their first Mountain West game of the season.

The Aztecs (2-3, 1-0 Mountain West) almost saw a fourth quarter lead slip away from them for the second straight week, after Hawaii quarterback Brayden Schager threw a go-ahead touchdown with under 10 minutes to play.

SDSU responded quickly, as quarterback Danny O’Neil connected with receiver Nate Bennett on a 48-yard pass deep into Hawaii territory.

Running back Marquez Cooper would run it in from two yards out to give the Aztecs the lead for good. Hawaii (2-3, 0-1 MW) would drive the ball into SDSU territory, but came up short on a fourth down and two.

Cooper had two touchdowns and 109 yards on the ground, and O’Neil finished with 224 yards and one touchdown pass.

SDSU snaps a three-game losing streak, and begins conference play 1-0.

The Aztecs next game is 12:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at Wyoming (1-4, 1-0 MW), which also snapped a long losing streak after beating Air Force Sept. 28.
