A $470,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety was awarded to the Escondido Police Department for enforcement programs, officials said Tuesday.

The programs include officer training, DUI checkpoints, cracking down on drivers who violate cell phone laws, looking for dangerous drivers, and community presentations on traffic safety.

The grant program lasts through next September.

“We are grateful to receive this grant, which will strengthen our traffic enforcement efforts and improve traffic road safety,” Escondido Police Chief Ed Varso said.
