A 41-year-old motorcyclist refused to pull over when a deputy tried to stop him for a registration violation Friday in Santee, prompting a chase that ended with the rider crashing and then getting pepper sprayed, zapped with a stun gun and arrested.
A deputy tried to stop the driver of a 2001 Kawasaki about 3:20 p.m. in the area of Mast Boulevard and Cuyacama Street because the bike’s registration was expired, San Diego County Sheriff‘s Sgt. Daniel Morsch said.
The rider, later identified as Anthony Ortega, sped off, prompting a short pursuit that ended when the motorcycle crashed in the parking lot of Edgemoor Hospital at 655 Park Center Drive, Morsch said.
Ortega was ejected from the bike, but got up and was approached by two deputies, Morsch said.
Ortega was uncooperative and combative, refusing the deputies’ commands, which led to him being doused with pepper spray and shocked with a Taser, Morsch said.
“The deputies were then able to subdue Ortega and place him in handcuffs,” according to the sergeant.
Ortega, who complained of pain, was examined at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, medically cleared and then booked on suspicion of felony evading, fighting law enforcement officers and operating a motorcycle while his license was suspended.
