The San Diego Gulls suffered their first loss Saturday after beginning the American Hockey League season with four victories, falling to the Bakersfield Condors 3-0 in a penalty-filled game at Bakersfield.
The Gulls failed to score on all six power-play opportunities and Condors goaltender Laurent Brossoit made 24 saves for his second shutout in four appearances this season.
Bakersfield, the AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, scored once in each period against Matt Hackett, who was making his season debut. Hackett made 18 saves before a crowd at Rabobank Arena announced at 4,787.
Five Gulls and four Condors received game misconduct penalties for their roles in a fight eight minutes, 51 seconds into the third period.
The Gulls (4-1-0-0) were called for eight minor penalties and Bakersfield (2-3-0-1) seven, outside of the fight.
Gulls defenseman Shane O’Brien received a misconduct penalty at 14:20 of the third.
The Gulls had 85 penalty minutes, the Condors 56.
Philip McRae opened the scoring at 6:09 of the first period.
Leon Draisaitl scored at 13:30 of the second period, three days before his 20th birthday. Edmonton chose Draisaitl with the third choice in the 2014 NHL Draft, the highest drafted German player in NHL history.
Ryan Hamilton scored Bakersfield’s lone power-play goal in nine opportunities at 5:20 of the third period.
Earlier today, defenseman Joe Piskula became the third Gull to be recalled by their NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks. Piskula was recalled after the Ducks placed defenseman Josh Manson on injured reserve because of an upper-body injury.
The Gulls next game will be Friday at the Valley View Casino Center against the Stockton Heat, the Calgary Flames AHL affiliate.
