More than 1,600 runners and walkers are expected to participate in Saturday night’s 29th annual Light the Night Against Crime 5K run to raise funds to support Crime Stoppers in San Diego.

Sheriff Bill Gore and San Diego Police Department Assistant Chief Mark Jones will join other local law enforcement partners in sending off runners and walkers at 7 p.m., in Balboa Park.

The event will also feature displays from many local law enforcement agencies including SWAT teams, search and rescue dogs and recruiting units. Funds raised by participants from the event will go towards cash rewards paid to people who call, text or send web tips to Crime Stoppers with information that leads to an arrest.

Crime Stoppers has helped to solve over 5,700 cases including 133 homicides, 49 sexual assaults and 763 robberies since its inception in 1984, according to the organization. More than 3,600 felony suspects have also been apprehended thanks to Crime Stoppers.

Many crimes would require lengthy investigations at considerable cost to the public while offenders could commit other crimes if not for the help of the tips line, according to Crime Stoppers.
