Firefighters battled a vegetation fire that straddled the border between San Diego and Mexico Saturday.

The fire started about 12:35 p.m. in the Buttewick Canyon area of the Otay Mountain Wilderness, according to CalFire San Diego.

The blaze has burned 80 acres in the U.S. and more than 80 acres in Mexico, according to a CalFire update, and was 10% contained.

Fire officials said the location is on the steep south slope of Otay Mountain in grass and brush, adding that the goal is to keep the fire from spreading any farther north into the U.S. They are coordinating with the Mexican Consulate “as needed.”

As of 9:06 p.m., 35 firefighters with three engines and one water tender were assigned to the area.
