A woman who was fatally struck Tuesday by an Amtrak train in Oceanside was seen lying across the tracks shortly beforehand and did not move when the engineer blasted the horn,  according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

The apparent suicide occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Broadway and Cassidy Street. The victim was in her 30s, according to Oceanside police.

“According to witnesses, southbound Amtrak Train #790 struck a female pedestrian who was seen lying across the tracks at that location, ” said Deputy Anthony Radicia said. “Witnesses said the female did not respond to the train’s horn warnings prior to being struck by the train.”

Although the incident occurred in Oceanside, it is being investigated by the sheriff’s Coaster/Railroad Enforcement Unit, which provides law enforcement services along the tracks.

Anyone with additional information was asked to call (858) 565-5200.
